We want to help you make your start to university as smooth and easy as possible.
In this section, you will find initial information about the structure of your studies and the first days at the School of Engineering and Design, as well as at TUM.
Every year, we, the student association, put together an extensive program for your first days at the university.
The program includes infoevents about your studies (organization, dates, etc.) as well as social events that allow for a relaxed get-to-gether.

General Information
Student Card
If you provided a valid German address during the enrollment process, the Student Card will be automatically sent to you after completing the enrollment process. This may take some time. You can check the status of your card on TUM Online. The Student Card serves as your student ID (with a photo), which you must also present during exams. The Student Card is also the only payment method for cafeterias, dining halls, and almost all espresso bars on the TUM campus. Additionally, it serves as your library card and provides access to the study rooms and computer pools of the FSBGU.
For more information about the Student Card or if you encounter any issues, click here.
Mensa
You will need your student card for the cafeteria, which you can top up at the machines in the entrance hall of the cafeteria. This will be demonstrated during the university tour. The student ID is also accepted as a payment method in the cafeterias, library (copying station), etc.; cash can only be used at the Audimax Café and the Crazy Bean Café located below the cafeteria.
You can find more information about the cafeterias and student cafés here
Library
Your student ID also serves as your library card. You can reserve study rooms/seats online in the library here.
Further information about the library will be provided through tours during the first week of lectures and can be found at www.ub.tum.de.
Semesterticket
Since the winter semester of 2023/24, there is a €29 ticket / Germany ticket for students in Bavaria, which you can order in a subscription format through the MVG portal. You will need your enrollment certificate for this. Your ticket is valid for one semester and must be renewed by uploading the new enrollment certificate in the next semester.
BAföG
You can find everything regarding BAföG here.
Language Courses
The TUM Language Center offers free language courses for students.
Particularly for the popular languages (the majority), quick registration is required to secure a course spot. Registrations for the winter semester are done through TUM Online.
You can find more information about the registration and the languages offered on the Language Center’s website.
Deadlines
You can find all dates and deadlines for TUM here: Dates and Deadlines – TUM. All our events can be found in our calendar.
Roomnumbers
HS 1200…0320…N1190…1180…2750…N6…2300. You might be wondering where the system is in all this. Well, it’s actually not that complicated.
The entire university complex is divided into different buildings, each assigned a unique number, and—if they do not connect directly to the main building—also a letter (N for Nordbau). Now you just need to remember what each digit of the four-digit numbers stands for.
If there is no letter in front of the room number (usually “N” for Nordbau), it refers to the main building.
- The first digit indicates the floor (0 – ground floor, 1 – first floor, etc.). Note: In Nordbau 1 (N1), the numbering starts on the first floor (0 – first floor, 1 – second floor, etc.).
- The second digit indicates the building (1 – building 1, 2 – building 2, etc.).
- The last two digits indicate the sequential room number.
At https://nav.tum.de/, you will find a handy room finder. Below the room designations, you can access links that provide detailed maps.
ZHS
The ZHS (Central University Sports) offers numerous sports programs for students. For a small flat fee per semester, you will receive a participation token. Before that, you need to register online for a ZHS card and then pick it up at the university with your student ID and a passport photo. Most offerings are located on the TUM campus in the Olympic Park. You can find opening hours, prices, and offerings in the flyers available at the beginning of the semester and on their website.
TUM-Online
TUM Online is our online portal that accompanies you during your application process and later serves as the central point of contact for various tasks, including creating schedules and registering for exams. The functions of the portal can be somewhat overwhelming, which is why you will receive a small booklet with explanations on your first day. Additionally, the IT Service Center has created useful YouTube tutorials. You will also compile your schedules through TUM Online. However, for your first semester, we will distribute your schedules during the orientation event and upload them to our homepage in due course.
