Study Grants
Since October 1, 2013, TUM has received study grants to compensate for the previous income from tuition fees. These funds may only be used to improve study and teaching conditions. TUM divides the use of these grants into two main areas:
Faculty-Specific Tasks
Faculty-specific tasks focus on targeted improvements in the scope, quality, and organization of teaching specific to the study programs. This includes measures such as courses, accompanying initiatives, internationalization, infrastructure, and e-learning, as well as potentially introducing new study programs. Measures to be financed within a faculty or school are developed in a planning committee with equal participation of students.
Community Tasks
Community tasks relate to matters affecting multiple or all faculties, specific or multiple TUM locations, impactful focus programs, or study-enhancing structural programs. This also includes construction projects and renovation measures that significantly improve study conditions. Community tasks are approved in a five-year plan, prepared by the Extended University Presidium based on specific proposals, with students being equally involved.
Decision-Making
Financial measures to be financed within a faculty or school are developed in a planning committee with equal participation of students. The final decision rests with the University Presidium.
Description
The Study Grant Commission (formerly SQK) makes decisions about the use of funds allocated to the School of Engineering and Design. This is done based on applications from departments or students, which are then voted on by the commission. The SZK comprises all departments of the school and organizes itself within the various program bundles. Voting rights are held by professors and student representatives from all departments. Students have 50% of the voting rights, allowing them to significantly influence the approval of applications. Each study program ideally has a voting representative in an advisory committee that prepares proposals for the grant commission’s decisions. These representatives advocate for student interests in fund allocation and subsequently inform about the decisions made.
